In history, my teacher was discussing General Custer and the Battle of Little Bighorn.
Here’s the shorthand version of it: Custer thought that he was all that in a bag of chips and he (along with the other 260 men in the 7th Calvary) had their butts handed back to them by the Lakota and Cheyenne tribes.
Some douche lord behind me said, “I don’t know why people are still mad over us taking over Indian lands - it was a long time ago and they need to get over it.”
He looked really proud about what he said too.
I almost had a heart attack restraining myself from backhanding this kid.
Now, I’m not Native myself, but I can imagine the injustice of having your land taken away from you by a foreign force who found you inferior. And then the humiliation of being confined to these reservations as a “compensation” - if you can even call it that - for the loss of your land, your people, your culture. It’s not something that one can simply “get over”.
I hope that kid realizes that the foundation upon which America’s prosperity had flourished from is essentially the suffering of the indigenous people.
I’m not saying that I hate America because, historically speaking, we had stolen land from the Natives. I’m saying that people should be more aware of these things before opening their mouths. It makes you look like less of a douche bag.
I don’t know why I even bother to look at the comments section of CBC articles, especially articles discussing Aboriginal Issues in Canada. People write the most ignorant, racist, vile, disgusting comments about the people whom they stole land from.
“It happened a long time ago, they should just get over it” “All they do is sit around and collect money from the government! I work so hard and my tax dollars blah blah blah” “I don’t like it when other groups have special privileges, we’re all equal!!111one”
Listen up, assholes, you have no idea how badly colonialism has impacted my people. You can claim it happened many moons ago, but colonialism has not gone away. Indigenous peoples still suffer because of it. If you think any differently, go piss up a rope.
